Source: MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES!
THE celebrity worship in TN is primarily traced to the 1960s especially with the popularity of MG Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan. Although there were superstars like MKT before him, this was the period when fan rivals started to become a trend. In the recent world, we still find celebrity worship to be strong with more rivalry against fans. There used to be competition between Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan now its Vijay and Ajith.
Vijay commonly known as Illaya Thalapathy has been in the Tamil industry for more than 25 years having 60 movies done. Vijay had started acting from his childhood days in his father’s films. People say it was easy for him to enter the industry with strong support as his dad was a director. However, his growth over the years has shown that a starting push is just not enough. The name, fans, and love he has earned for more than two decades now is purely because of hard work. His film releases are celebrated as festivals by his fans. Vijay in his initial stages was introduced as a soft spoken romantic hero. He later on reached the status of a mass commercial hero.
My Personal Favourites: –
Even though the film was a remake of a telugu film called “Okaddu”, the film had a phenomenal reception. Ghilli was one of the main reasons why Vijay had a got a huge fan base. Thirumalai was the movie in which Vijay had changed himself to play a mass commercial hero, which was received well. by the audience. The release of ghilli further made him get the perfect image of a mass commercial hero. Ghilli would be an all-time favourite for the fans and might be your favourite even if you don’t like him. A simple plot with racy screenplay and great performances make the movie special. Prakash Raj has to be given a special mention for his performance also.
Priyamudan was the first film in which Vijay had played a negative role. It was one of the few films in which Vijay had shown variety by playing a different role. This film had come out when he was giving a string of successful romantic movies, which was new for the audiences. The film is about a person who is hyper-possessive in nature with negative shades and therefore, tries to achieve whatever he desires using any means. I don’t know why has never tried playing moor e roles like this hope he does in the future! If you haven’t seen this film give it a try!
A recent blockbuster for Vijay was Kaththi. The reason why Kaththi is my personal favourite in recent times was because of the characters Jeevanandham and Kathiresan. The Jeevanandham character showed he has a way better performer inside him especially during the villages scenes. In recent times that was a character which was a bit different.
A film which he redefined Vijay’s position in the industry was Pokkiri. Pokkiri was a remake of the telugu version. The highlight of this film was the way he had underplayed to role of rogue who is an undercover cop for a mission. The film has mass moments with powerful dialogues. Pokkiri was an all in all commercial film which didn’t fail to entertain. The attitude and screen presence carried by Vijay is why it remains to be a permanent favourite to people.
This film portrayed Vijay in light-hearted way. He had played the character with such ease and showed that comedy is his natural game. The scenes between Vadivelu and Vijay are still a treat to watch. Also, to mention the famous ” Vadi vaddi” song the lyrics sung by Vijay was a huge hit.
A Vijay movie which was underrated was Thalaivaa. The film had a lot of problems to face for its release and eventually got postponed in Tamil Nadu and released everywhere else. The movie later on released after a week. We have seen Vijay play don like roles in his previous films, Thalaivaa shows a more mature and pensive character. The transformation from Vishwa being care free to realising his responsibility and becoming Vishwa Bhai was something intense and serious which usually doesn’t happen in a Vijay film. Thalaivaa is one of my all-time favourites of Vijay.
A film which was liked not only by his fans but also the general audience was Thuppaki. The film had a racy screenplay supported by Vijay’s powerhouse performance. The film had a famous interval block dialogue “IAM WAITING”. The movie was a huge commercial hit. It was Vijay’s first 100cr blockbuster.
Mersal was a nearly a one man show. It’s the first time where Vijay has played 3 characters and my personal favourite was the Madurai veeran “Vetri Maran”. I felt that this role showed Vijay’s acting potential which isn’t always seen, some scenes show that he is more than just a performer. Although I really hope that the Vijay-Atlee combo does get a break. Would like to see him work with other directors as well.
Another film that helped Vijay’s fan base to expand was Thirupachi. The film was driven on strong commercial formula which was played to Vijay’s strength. The film was a huge success and went on the be remade in Telugu by Pawan Kalyan. The film was an out and out commercial film directed by Perasrsu. The success of Thirupachi made them to work on more film which was Sivakasi. This film again had all the essential elements to collect big at the box office.
Apart from these films Vijay has given a number of hits from movies like Kushi, Kadhalaku Mariyadhai, Thirumalai, Nanban, Kavalan, etc. Vijay has always been the best performers in the industry but he somehow seems to be caught in the commercial zone. Everyone knows he has the capacity to do more. The first thing is he should become more selective about the directors and scripts he chooses. It’s about time he starts to bring variety in the roles he starts to play and he surely will.
At last he might not be the best of actors, but certainly he is one of the best entertaining performers!
THE ATTITUDE AND SCREEN PRESENCE OF HIS IS WHAT MAKES HIM SPECIAL. ONCE A FAN , ALWAYS A FAN! #HBDTHALAIVAA
AISk: In recent times there has been some changes in the types of movies coming out in our industry its also good to see the same in the small screen. In tamil “As Iam Suffering From Kadhal” is the first tamil web series to be launched. The series id directed by Balaji Mohan who is known to have a good sense of humour which was shown in his previous films like Maari, Vaya Moodi Pesavum etc. The trailer had exposed what this is series was about. It seem to be a story about 3 couples and one divorce. Everyone did want to know about this show. Was it good enough?
The show is based on the different problems that arise between couples before they tie the knot and after, the issues faced by couples who don’t believe in the concept of marriage and the complications in the life of a divorcee. It brings out the various complex situations couples face. Do all these situations have answers or solutions? You will have to watch the series to find out!
A new brave attempt is to be appreciated. The show has a lot of bold moments for a tamil series. The abusive words used, the problems that arise between these couples all of them have not been openly shown in movies I guess. Although from the start its easy to identify the target audience for this show. The show would certainly appeal to them. This could be an encouraging step for more web series to come out.
Although the show doesn’t really get you interested from the first episode it takes time. It starts slow with the introduction of various characters along with some forced comedy. Once the characters are all grouped together the show starts to pick up its pace. The show certainly scores high on comedy it also works very well in most places. Good background scores are also to be mentioned. You will still find the usual cliche moments which are common to all Tv shows and series. There were some scenes which seemed to be artifical and forced but there weren’t many. A huge positive in the show was the cast. The cast had done a great job to bring life in the show. The top performers were Dhanya Ramu and Sanath they did a great job. Nakshathra and SanchanaWHATS had also done justice to their roles. Balaji Mohan was good but there were some scenes where he just didnt sync. The locations shown for their houses parties etc looked great. The show is certainly not perfect but at the same time its not a bad start. The series seems to extend to season 2 as that is how the final episode had finished. To conclude the show has pros and cons but it ends on a positive note.
VERDICT: THE BOLD SERIES HAS A SLOW START PICKS UP PACE AS THE SHOW GOES AND ENDS ON A POSITIVE NOTE. GIVE IT A TRY. YOU WILL NOT “SUFFER FROM WATCHING THIS SHOW”.
Production: ARM Productions, Fox Star Studios
Cast: Gautham Karthik
Direction: Rajkumar Periasamy
Screenplay: Rajkumar Periasamy
Rangoon:-In recent times the first looks or initial teasers have been the best methods to gain a film popularity. Especially for small budget films it’s been a good method of promotion. Rangoon was such a film that gained popularity when the trailer had released. It’s a young team with a debut director and produced by AR Murgadoss. Did the film live up to the expectations?
The film revolves around a young boy called Venkat who comes to Chennai from Burma. He later on gets acquintated with the boys of north madras, and they end up becoming best friends. After Venkat’s dad dies we are introduced to Siya(jewellery shop owner). The incidents which take place after Venkat bonds with Siya is what the story is about.
The film certainly has an interesting start and keeps us engaged through major parts of the movies especially when the team is shown how they smuggle, trade etc. However in my view I felt that there were to many parallel incidents which were distracting the movie from the main plot. The movie had a strong base which was centred on friendship, loyalty and smuggling. Later on there were love tracks and family sentiments which seemed to dull the pace of the film. However a film which is delivered commercially does have this. This wasn’t a huge problem but it certainly was felt through the film. The director still does well to makes us think on what could happen next and a good twist in the end which keeps the movie going.
This film is a huge breakthrough for Gautham Karthik a new role which he has never played and his character was given great detail and was well framed. He had done justice for his role. Sana who makes a debut in kollywood has the usual ordinary role. The director has seem to done a lot of research on smuggling these scenes deserve a special recognition those were the scenes which made the movie interesting. A promising effort from a debut director. None of the songs seem to be that great and the background scores were just about average.
VERDICT:- THE MOVIE HAVING GOOD TWISTS SOMEHOW HAD A LOT GOING AROUND WHICH SEEMED TO DISTRACT THE MAIN PLOT. HOWEVER THE MOVIE STILL CARRIES ITSELF IN A WAY PEOPLE LIKE. OVERALL IT ENDS ON A POSITIVE NOTE.
GOOD IN BAD.
The man we saw 9 times last year is back with KV Anand this
year. Like the rising craze for Vijay Sethupathy the movie had
also gained hype and expectations, did the movie live up to them?
These are some common questions for which people would want answers when they want to know about the movie. At the end we would conclude all the below answers into a “Simple Verdict”.
Q.1) What is the story?
A: The story revolves around Tilak, who becomes a reporter at Zen One TV channel. The channel’s boss, Kalyan is more interested in making money through sensationalism and agrees for a deal with politician Maniarasu, who doesn’t have a good reputation amongst public. After Maniarasu’s men molest Kalpana , a young girl who takes part in protests with her boyfriend Abdul, Tilak does an expose on this issue, but Kalyan decides to make the story in favour of the politician. Due to which Tilak quits his job and along with his friends in the channel, teams up with Mayilvaganan, the owner of a struggling channel.
Q.2) How were the performances?
A: Tilak being played Vijay Sethupathy is a huge positive in this film. . His casual attitude for comedy and natural performance makes him shine throughout the film. Mayilvaganan played by T. Rajendar has just done this character in his usual style by giving his trademark punches. Its good to see him on screen. Kalyan played by Akashdeep is convincing and follows his own style. Madonna has done a neat job of playing her role. Maniarasu has a played his character really well and it was needed. Jagan and Pandiraj have done given their best. Vikranth’s role seemed more of a extended cameo although he had done a good job of playing his role.
Q.3) What worked in the film?
A: The story content was a huge plus, KV anand made sure that the film had created impacts with the various social issues discussed in the film. The songs were enjoyable especially the “happy happy new year-u”. Hip Hop Adi had given good background scores especially during one car chase scene is to be mentioned.Certain scenes were added in the film just to show the dark side of media these scenes were used well to show they cheat the audience. The interval block was taken well and and is a scene to watch out for. Dialogues are also worth to be mentioned. A huge positive for this film is the casting and the performances by the various artists.
Q.4) What didn’t work in the film?
A: The movie starts in a fast pace but somehow just doesnt keep that pace constant througiut the film. The running time of the movie seemed to be a bit long which i think is the reason why the pace got dropped. With the first half being neat the second half suddenly became a mixture of many commercial elements although the movie ends neatly.
NOW THE VERDICT WILL BE FRAMED FROM THE ABOVE ANSWERS.
VERDICT:- KAVAN HAS A STRONG CONCEPT BACKED BY THE SUPPORT OF A GREAT CAST WHICH OVERSHADOWS THE MINOR FLAWS IN THE FILMS. MAY NOT BE AN AYAN OR KO BUT CERTAINLY KAVAN DOESN’T FAIL TO ENTERTAIN.
Production: Prabhu Deva Studios
Cast: Arvind Swamy, Hansika Motwani, Jayam Ravi
Music: D Imman
Bogan: The first film of Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swamy had a great impact and was known to be a successful combo. This combo joins again under the direction of Lakshman. The posters released for this movie seemed different and gave way for expectations. Was the movie something different? Did it live up to the expectations?
The movie is about a true and just cop Vikram(Ravi) who falls in love with a girl called Mahalakshmi(Hansika). Later on both of them get married. At the same time we are introduced to Aditya (Arvind Swami), who is having a lavish life with girls and drinks for company. Aditya uses a special power which he uses to do illegal activities.
In one such activity a link is established between Vikram and Aditya. What happens to both because of this?you’ll have to watch the film!
SPEAKING OF PERFORMANCES: The major positive of the film is the roles done by Ravi and Arvind Swamy. Arvind Swamy as usually portrayed his swag and did his role with class. Hansika plays a typical Tamil film heroine who comes for a couple of love scenes and songs. The story was fresh. The love scenes and songs did slow down the pace of the film. Background scores had a good effect on some scenes.
VERDICT: BOGAN MIGHT NOT BE PREFECT. A FRESH STORY WITH GREAT PERFORMANCES WHICH AT THE END ENTERTAINS!
Raees: SRK is back to theatres with his new film Raees. All of us will have to agree that the movie’s first look and trailer had given the film a lot of expectations. Did the movie live up to what was expected?
The film is set in the state of Gujarat. The movie starts with an introduction of a young kid called Raees who learns about liquor business and decides to become a liquor dealer when he grows up.
Later on we are introduced to a police officer played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui who playes only according to the rules. The film later on unfolds the story of a cruel and clever bootlegger, whose business is challenged by a tough cop.
It’s Shah Rukh Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui who have given life to this film. SRK has given all his swag and style to make this character special. It was the story which didn’t have depth and somehow the background scores didn’t add more life. Another problem was the run time of the film, but the movie does have its moments.
VERDICT: A SURE TREAT FOR ALL SRK FANS! IF YOU AREN’T AND JUST LOOKING FOR SOME GOOD TIMEPASS ENTERTAINMENT GO AHEAD.
Cast: Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen, Felicity Jones
Direction: Gareth Edwards
Screenplay: Chris Weitz, Tony Gilroy
Story: Gary Whitta, John Knoll
Music: Michael Giacchino
Background score: Michael Giacchino
ROGUE ONE: It’s great to know that a Star Wars movie is releasing each year. This year rogue one is out. Star Wars is a huge franchise and this movie is another addition. A new story in the galaxy had got fans curious of what could happen in this movie. The trailer was received well, and later the movie’s preview show raised the expectations! Did the movie live up to the expectations?
The story is about a young girl Jyn Erso(Felicity Jones) who is separated from her family due to certain reasons. Later on she goes in search of her father and comes to know that the galaxy is danger and decides to fight as her father tells her the only way to destroy the Death Star. After which the rebellion fight against the dark lord from making a deadly weapon called the “Death Star” which if built could destroy the entire galaxy. Is she successful in her mission? Was the death star destroyed? You’ll have to watch the movie to know!
There is a chatty droid called K-2 who would easily become another rememberable droid , he adds to the humour in the film. The film has various action sequences which were intense and as usual in Star Wars movies the visual effects and graphics are major positives and it’s the same for this one. The pace of the film is another positive it doesn’t feel slow.
- VERDICT: ITS GREAT TO SEE HOW VAST THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE IS. A FRESH STORYLINE WITH INTRODUCTION OF NEW CHARACTERS COMES OUT AS ANOTHER SPECIAL MOVIE FOR THE FANS.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them: IT’S HERE!!!!! It’s been a long wait and all of us wanted to go back to the magical word. Although this time J.K Rowling doesn’t write the story alone, she takes care of the screenplay of the film. All of us were excited to hear that this movie was coming up. The trailers and promos made it more special. Was it yet again another magical tale?
The movie starts with the introduction of Newt Scamander who has been travelling around the globe to find and document an magnificent array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York he gets his magical case full of creatures exchanged with a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, which leads to the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could cause trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds. You’ll have to watch the movie to know more!
The movie has a great cast. As usual the VFX and cinematography were excellent. Like the previous series there were dark moments so it builds a platform for the upcoming movies. Don’t compare this with the old series this is something different . Thank J.K Rowling for making the magical world something special again.
VERDICT: THE MAGICAL WORLD COMES TO LIFE AGAIN WITH NEW CHARACTERS AND DOESN’T DISAPPOINT. A NEW FRANCHISE HAS STARTED!
