Simple Verdicts

THE celebrity worship in TN is primarily traced to the 1960s especially with the popularity of MG Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan. Although there were superstars like MKT before him, this was the period when fan rivals started to become a trend. In the recent world, we still find celebrity worship to be strong with more rivalry against fans. There used to be competition between Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan now its Vijay and Ajith.img_2666-e1498114347472.png

Vijay commonly known as Illaya Thalapathy has been in the Tamil industry for more than 25 years having 60 movies done. Vijay had started acting from his childhood days in his father’s films. People say it was easy for him to enter the industry with strong support as his dad was a director. However, his  growth over  the years has shown that a starting push is just not enough. The name, fans, and love he has earned for more than two decades now is purely because of hard work. His film releases are celebrated as festivals by his fans. Vijay in his initial stages was introduced as a soft spoken romantic hero. He later on reached the status of a mass commercial hero.

My Personal Favourites: –

  1. Ghilli

Even though the film was a remake of a telugu film called “Okaddu”, the film had a phenomenal reception. Ghilli was one of the main reasons why Vijay had a got a huge fan base. Thirumalai was the movie in which Vijay had changed himself to play a mass commercial hero, which was received well. by the audience.  The release of ghilli further made him get the perfect image of a mass commercial hero. Ghilli would be an all-time favourite for the fans and might be your favourite even if you don’t like him. A simple plot with racy screenplay and great performances make the movie special. Prakash Raj has to be given a special mention for his performance also.

  2. Priyamudan

Priyamudan  was the first film in which Vijay had played a negative     role. It was one of the few films in which Vijay had shown variety by playing a different role. This film had come out when he was giving a string of successful romantic movies, which was new for the audiences. The film is about a person who is hyper-possessive in nature with negative shades and therefore, tries to achieve whatever he desires using any means. I don’t know why has never tried playing moor e roles like this hope he does in the future! If you haven’t seen this film give it a try!

  3. Kaththi

A recent blockbuster for Vijay was Kaththi. The reason why Kaththi is my personal favourite in recent times was because of the characters Jeevanandham and Kathiresan. The Jeevanandham character showed he has a way better performer inside him especially during the villages scenes. In recent times that was a character which was a bit different.IMG_2670

  4. Pokkiri

A film which he redefined Vijay’s position in the industry was Pokkiri. Pokkiri was a remake of the telugu version. The highlight of this film was the way he had underplayed to role of rogue who is an undercover cop for a mission. The film has mass moments with powerful dialogues. screenshot_20170621-102501.png Pokkiri was an all in all commercial film which didn’t fail to entertain. The attitude and screen presence carried by Vijay is why it remains to be a permanent favourite to people.

  5. Sachein

This film portrayed Vijay in light-hearted way. He had played the character with such ease and showed that comedy is his natural game. The scenes between Vadivelu and Vijay are still a treat to watch. Also, to mention the famous ” Vadi vaddi” song the lyrics sung by Vijay was a huge hit.

  6. Thalaivaa

A Vijay movie which was underrated was Thalaivaa. The film had a lot of problems to face for its release and eventually got postponed in Tamil Nadu and released everywhere else. The movie later on released after a week. We have seen Vijay play don like roles in his previous films, Thalaivaa shows a more mature and pensive character. The transformation from Vishwa being care free to realising his responsibility and becoming Vishwa Bhai was something intense and serious which usually doesn’t happen in a Vijay film. Thalaivaa is one of my all-time favourites of Vijay.img_2495.png

  7. Thuppaki

A film which was liked not only by his fans but also the general audience was Thuppaki.  The film had a racy screenplay supported by Vijay’s powerhouse performance. The film had a famous interval block dialogue “IAM WAITING”. The movie was a huge commercial hit. It was Vijay’s first 100cr blockbuster.

  8. Mersal

Mersal was a nearly a one man show. It’s the first time where Vijay has played 3 characters and my personal favourite was the Madurai veeran “Vetri Maran”. I felt that this role showed Vijay’s acting potential which isn’t always seen, some scenes show that he is more than just a performer. Although I really hope that the Vijay-Atlee combo does get a break. Would like to see him work with other directors as well. 36070053290_69ab13a4c5_b

  9. Thirupachi

Another film that helped Vijay’s fan base to expand was Thirupachi. The film was driven on strong commercial formula which was played to Vijay’s strength. The film was a huge success and went on the be remade in Telugu by Pawan Kalyan. The film was an out and out commercial film directed by Perasrsu. The success of Thirupachi made them to work on more film which was Sivakasi. This film again had all the essential elements to collect big at the box office.

Apart from these films Vijay has given a number of hits from movies like Kushi, Kadhalaku Mariyadhai, Thirumalai, Nanban, Kavalan, etc. Vijay has always been the best performers in the industry but he somehow seems to be caught in the commercial zone. Everyone knows he has the capacity to do more. The first thing is he should become more selective about the directors and scripts he chooses. It’s about time he starts to bring variety in the roles he starts to play and he surely will.

At last he might not be the best of actors, but certainly he is one of the best entertaining performers!screenshot_20180622-073535.png

Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Christoph Waltz, Djimon Hounsou, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson
Direction: David Yates
Screenplay: Adam Cozad, Craig Brewer
Story: Adam Cozad, Craig Brewer, Edgar Rice Burroughs
Music: Rupert Gregson-Williams
Background score: Rupert Gregson-Williams

The Legend Of Tarzan: It was great news once an official confirmation was given by David Yates that he’ll be directing this movie. Tarzan already being a classic character had given the movie great awareness. Did Tarzan give us a classic adventure again?

We’ve all known the Tarzan who was raised by the apes, later on becoming the king of the jungle. In this movie the story starts with Tarzan to be known as John Clayton who had left the jungle and had come to London with his wife Jane.

Later on John Clayton is asked to go to the jungle as a delegate accompanied by a US delegate Willaims(who was sent to make a report on slavery) for political purposes. Although this is a master plan by Leon Rom(Belgian officer). The plan is to handover Tarzan to Chief Mbonga in exchange for diamonds available in that territory as Belgium was in need of funds for their rubber operations.

Does Captain Rom succeed with his plan? Does Tarzan manage to save his people? You’ll have to see the movie to know what adventure he has for us.

Alexander Skarsgard is the perfect cast for Tarzan he has the perfect physique and has given a superb performance. Margot Robbie has done a good job of playing Jane.  Samuel L Jackson and Christoph Waltz have given powerful performances. The performances in this movie have been a major positive. There were adventurous scenes in which CGI was superb, but somehow  it didn’t have an overall impact. The film lost its pace during various scenes due to which the movie didn’t seem to be special.

Production: Pixar Animation Studios , Walt Disney Pictures
Cast: Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres
Direction: Andrew Stanton
Screenplay: Andrew Stanton
Story: Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, Victoria Strouse
Music: Thomas Newman

Finding Dory: Finding nemo was another special movie which was made by Disney and Pixar, the film is still remembered and special to all. After 13 years Disney and Pixar have presented finding dory. Have they done all that was needed to make this also special?

The movie starts with the introduction of baby Dory who later gets separated, and searches the ocean until she forgets what she has been looking for. After which she meets Marlin and helps him find nemo.

The plot takes place after a year from which nemo is found. Hanging around with Marlin and nemo, Dory starts remembering some bits of her past and decides to set on a quest to search for answers about her past. Could she remember everything? Could she find her parents? To see if Dory could you’ll have to watch the movie.

There have been new charcters introduced in the movie  out of which Hanks who is an octopus with seven legs will be a new favourite.  The new charcters help in bringing out some laughter during the movie. However the story felt really similar to finding nemo. Ellen Degeneres certainly needs to be appreciated for the voice of dory she has done a great job. Pixar is just getting better with their animation, excellent visuals.

VERDICT:- Eventhough the story runs on the same lines as the first part, Dory and her friends have gone through an adventure which will be enjoyed by us. Finding dory is sure to give you some good old memories!

Fan: It’s been sometime since we have seen a challenging role played by King Khan. As soon as the teaser and trailer came out it gave us some sort of a different idea about the movie which raised the expectations. Did the movie live up to the expectations of the fans?

The story is about a famous super star Aryan Khanna(Shah Rukh Khan) who is admired, idolised and worshipped by his FAN Gaurav Channa(Shah Rukh Khan) who claims to be a junior to Aryan Khanna. The problem begins when the craze and obsession of Guarav over Aryan Khaana crosses the line.

The  movie starts with the introduction of Aryan Khanna, who is known to be a famous superstar in Bollywood who has millions of fans. Amongst the million number of fans there is a 25 year old boy called Guarav who is a DIE-HARD FAN of Aryan Khanna. Like any other fan his dream is to meet the superstar. A competition takes place in his colony and he wins a award for acting like his idol and also recives a cash prize.

Garuav later decides to dedicate this award to Aryan Khanna on his upcoming birthday and travels to Mumbai for this purpose. This is  where the movie gets started.  Was Guarav successful in dedicating his award to Arayan or does something else happen? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out!

Speaking of  Performances:-

Sharuh Khan had played the role of Aryan Khana and Garuav.  The film was fully about Sharuh Khan vs Sharuh Khan. Although the Junior Aryan Khanna’s (Gaurav) performance outshines the performance of Super star(Aryan Khana). The performance as Gaurav was the major plus point of this film, and from the start SRK stole the show with this character.

However Fan did not maintain the same pace and effect in the second half which was felt in the first half. That was mainly because of the sketchy editing and long chase scenes  between both the khans , but the film picks up momentum again in the last 20 minutes. Dialogues were spot on.

Verdict:- Apart from  some minor drawbacks , FAN is a movie which would  keep you engaged throughout the film due to its different concept supported by the grand performance of King Khan. If you’re an SRK fan you will be a proud fan after watching this movie and even if you aren’t this movie will keep you interested.

KAPOOR AND SONS(since1921)

Rishi Kapoor
Rajat Kapoor
Ratna Pathak
Sidharth Malhotra
Fawad Afzal Khan
Alia Bhatt

Kapoor and sons (Since 1921):The film is a family comedy drama. This film was popular amongst public due to the multiple star  cast. Did the film match up to its expectations? Did the Kapoor family give us a good time?

The story is about a family in which each of them have their own problems but still try to put a smile on their faces.

The movie starts with Dadu(Rishi Kapoor) suffering from a heart attack.  Hearing this Rahul(Fawad Khan) and Arjun(Sidarth Malhotra ) fly back to Connor to visit their Dadu. This is when the Kapoor family reunites but also realise the number of individual problems they have! Rahul is portrayed as the perfect child in the family as he has a control over his life on the other hand Arjun feels insecure about himself as his life still has no direction, this brings out a bad equation between these two. Adding to this Rahul and Arjun’s Mom Sunita(Ratna Patak) and Dad Harsh(Rajat Kapoor) fight frequently to save their marriage strings. Later we learn that Harsh is going through a financial crisis also.

As we come to know the various problems of each member of the Kapoor family, a new character called Tia(Alia Bhatt) is introduced. She first meets Rahul and then Arjun. She is easygoing in nature and whose romantic inclinations might further widen the rift between the brothers. Do all the problems get solved or are there some sacrifices made? Watch the movie to know!

Speaking of performances:
Rishi Kapoor has made us love his character. He has done a great job he is the kind of Dadu any grand kids would want, there are so many scenes were he makes us laugh and feel cool about him. Another show stealer was Fawad Khan his role of Rahul was played with perfection, and made us easily connect with the difficulties faced by his character. Ratna Patak had done a great job of playing the loving and caring mother. Siddarth Malhotra had done a neat job of his character he did justice to his role. Alia Bhat played the role of Tina with ease, even though she didn’t have many scenes her presence was felt.

Each character in the movie was given proper detail which made the movie have a strong base. Director Shakun Batra has done a good job of keeping the movie intact with the story and not building upon excess drama.

Directed by Manivanan

Cast: Jai, Surabhi, RJ Balaji, Karunas

Pugazh: Pugazh is a movie which comes under the political thriller category. People said the film is based on a true event that has happened in Walajapet(Vellore district). Did the film prove to be interesting?

The story is about a playground that is used for various sport activities which has always been special to the town people. Later a politician decides to sell this playground and people start opposing this act.

The movie starts with the Pugazh(Jai) attacked by a gang of people, after which the movie gets into a flashback. Pugazh is a young, responsible bold lad who is very famous in his neighbourhood and is always surrounded by his gang of close friends. Being a very responsible man Pugazh always gets into trouble by fighting with the local dons.  During one of those fights we are introduced to a politician called Das. Das however decides to use Pugazh as contestant for the upcoming elections, but he refuses. That is when Das decides to make Pugwash’s friend Venkat stand for the same post. This helps in bridging the gap between Das and Pugazh by working together for the victory of Venkat.

After winning the elections Das shows his true colour and decides to sell the local playground to a minster and an Andhra business man. Will Das’s plan be successful? You’ll have to watch the movie to know!

Speaking of performances: –

Jai has done a good job of playing this character. He was one of the plus factors in the film. RJ Balaji didn’t have many lines, but with the few lines he had he manged to make us laugh. Karunas had played the role of Pugazhs brother and had done a neat job. Surabhi played the love interest of Pugazh, she did not have such a powerful role in this movie
Director Manivanan should have focused more on the screenplay, the story line was interesting but the movie wasn’t fast and felt dull in some scenes. There weren’t many songs in the movie. The background music scored by Solomon and Siva was impressive.

Verdict- A movie which could have been a perfect political thriller, but turns out to be a film which should have been treated better. However, the plot being interesting makes it an above average flick.

This is totally a new attempt. Just wanted to try it out. It’s not related to any movie review.

We always had good times,
Or was it just me who thought so
We both laughed during fun times,
Or was I being laughed at those times

Some questions arise regarding you,
But I had only one answer for all
We both had the only answer I thought
Or was it just me who thought so

Love and faith were common to both I thought,
But fortunately that’s where I got caught
I thought we had a common line,
But that’s when I realised it was only a single line

Does it hurt?
Yes it does but not always
Is there pain?
Yes there is but not always

Is there something wrong with me
Because I would never blame you
And that could be
Because I loved you.

But life must go on
And so should you.

Cast: Atharva, Catherine Tresa, Tarun Arora

Direction: TN Santhosh
Screenplay: TN Santhosh
Story: TN Santhosh
Music: Drums Sivamani
Background score: Drums Sivamani
Production: Kalaipuli S Thanu

Kanithan comes under the action thriller category.  The film had gained more popularity after its trailer had released.Director T.N Santhosh who had worked as AR Murgadoss ‘s assistant also added hype to the movie.  Did the movie live up to the hype created?

The story  is about a television reporter who tries to bring down a fake document criminal gang. The plot is interesting because it revolves around fake certificate printing. The movie starts with Gautham(Atharva)  being arrested by cops making use of a fake certificate (which was not made by him) to get a TV reporter job. Just like the other innocent people who were arrested  he tries to justifies he has not done anything wrong.

Gautham is later given bail. That is when he decides to prove himself innocent by tracking down the whole network which is responsible for this act.  He starts his investigation with the help of his friends who work like a team, and uses his media influence. Was Gautham successful in tracking the group you’ll have to see the movie to find that out!

Speaking of performances:-

Atharva has done a neat job of playing his role. He had done justice to the role of playing a reporter. K bhagayaraj, Karunakaran and Sunder Ramu had important roles to play in the story which was played well by all three especially Karunakaran. Catherine Tersa (Anu) played the love interest of  Gautham, she did not have such a powerful role in this movie. The villain Tarun Arora was a perfect choice for his role. He played the stylish and classy villain which was just needed for this type of a film.

For a debut director T.N Santhosh has done a neat job of taking this commercial thriller. Although there were a lot of scenes which were  similar to Vijay and ARM’s Thuppaki, especially the investigation and action sequences. The screenplay was also really similar to Thuppaki. Music scored by Sivamani could have been better songs were below a average and the background score could have been more classy. Placement of songs were the major disadvantage of this film.

VERDICT:-  A film which has a fresh and interesting plot could have been a well made commercial film if it weren’t for the bad song timings.  Leaving that aside Kanithan is a type of an action thriller movie  you’ll enjoy and watch.
